What the name means
The Tourism Promotions Board’s festival note says Sambuokan comes from buok, meaning one, and describes a thanksgiving for Mati’s cultures, sports and adventure spots, observed as a weeklong founding anniversary every 29 October. A diocesan directory uses the same gloss and calls buok a Mandaya word. That is the meaning to use. It is not a flower name, and it is not a dance step.
Dates, including the one still ahead
29 October is the anniversary date those sources repeat. The week before it is the usual shape. As of 12 September 2026, Mati has not, in the sources used here, posted the 2026 street-dance hour or the gate. If you are travelling this October, check the city in the next few weeks and do not buy a non-refundable room for the 29th on the strength of a pattern. Indak-indak, the street-dance competition named in older notes, is a highlight when it is scheduled. It is not automatically the 29th.
