A visitor who books “December in Pampanga” without naming the night can miss both headliners, or mix them into one parade that does not exist.

How Kapampangan festivals differ
Pampanga sits north of Manila in Central Luzon. Many calendars grew around Catholic patrons. Others grew around rice, lantern craft, woodcarving, or recovery after the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruptions. The City of San Fernando hosts the two events travelers search first: Ligligan Parul and Sinukwan. They share a city.
They do not share a purpose or a date.
San Fernando presents itself as the Christmas Capital of the Philippines because of the lantern industry. That is a city reputation, widely used on official pages. It is not a claim that every Filipino Christmas custom began here. Other towns light parol too.

Giant Lantern Festival (Ligligan Parul)
Ligligan Parul means lantern contest. Barangay teams build giant parol and light them in timed patterns set to music. Recent documented contest nights were Saturdays: 17 December 2022, 16 December 2023, 14 December 2024, and 13 December 2025.
Several of those editions used Robinsons Starmills, then kept the lanterns on later exhibition nights. That is a pattern, not a 2026 booking.

Sinukwan Festival
Sinukwan is San Fernando’s Kapampangan cultural week. It honours Aring Sinukwan, a culture-hero figure the festival links with Mount Arayat. Street dance, pageants, food, and youth contests fill the programme. FLKI organises recent editions with city and mall partners.

Kuraldal in Sasmuan
Kuraldal is a Santa Lucia devotion in Sasmuan. The January gathering, Kuraldal Atlung Ari, sits around the Feast of the Three Kings on 6 January. Local accounts also tie the season to Santa Lucia on 13 December. The 2026 January rite has passed. This is a vow and a petition, including for the sick, not a costume carnival. Apung Iru fluvial feast in Apalit
Apalit honours St. Peter the Apostle, called Apung Iru, with a three-day libad on the Pampanga River. The usual pattern is 28 to 30 June. In 2026 the 182nd libad moved the image from Barangay Capalangan toward St. Peter the Apostle Parish, then returned it on 30 June.
Local news described hundreds of boats and a large river crowd. Follow Coast Guard and town safety rules. Past years have seen drownings and electrical accidents. The 2026 feast is over. Confirm 2027 hours with the Apalit parish and LGU.
Makatapak Festival in Bacolor
Makatapak refers to going barefoot. Bacolor’s festival remembers townsfolk who walked through lahar after Pinatubo and rebuilt around the sunken church. It is usually staged in November with the town’s La Naval season. Street dance is the public picture. The meaning is recovery and faith. The 2026 date is not published here.

Duman Festival in Santa Rita
Duman is young green glutinous rice, toasted and pounded by hand, and sold as a Christmas-season delicacy. Santa Rita and ArtiSta.Rita stage an annual festival around that craft. The 2025 edition was 6 December at the Santa Rita de Cascia Parish Church grounds.

Pyestang Tugak and Dukit
Pyestang Tugak, the Frog Festival, is a San Fernando civic event that grew from frog-catching in rice fields and from betute, stuffed frog. City histories place the start in 2003. Older programmes used mid-October. This hub does not list a settled 2026 weekend without a city notice. Confirm with the City of San Fernando.
Dukit is the Kapampangan word for carving. Betis, in Guagua, is known for church retablos, furniture, and religious images. The Dukit Festival appears on the provincial calendar in December. Treat that as a standing note. Ask Guagua or Betis for the live exhibit and contest days.

- Lantern night is a judged show. Do not block rotor crews or the viewing line for a phone video.
- Processions in Sasmuan, Apalit, and Bacolor are vows. Give the church door and the pagoda space.
- Ask before close portraits of children in pageants or barefoot dancers.
- December traffic on the North Luzon Expressway and inside San Fernando is heavy. Leave slack.
- Do not treat sisig, betute, or duman stalls as the festival itself.
