What the race is, and what it is not

A regatta is a set of boat races. In Zamboanga the craft is the vinta, also called lepa-lepa or sakayan in some local speech. The sail is the picture people remember: vertical bands of colour. City and news accounts present the race as a living coastal skill.

Many crews come from barangays along the shore, such as Sinunuc, Sta. Cruz Island, Kasanyangan, Mariki, and Pangapuyan in the 2025 results list.

Hermosa is the wider city festival. Faith sits at the outdoor shrine of Fort Pilar. Civic events fill the boulevard, Paseo del Mar, and other venues through late September and October. The regatta is one morning on the water. It does not replace the 12 October procession or Mass.

It is also not MassKara, not a Mindanao-wide carnival, and not a tourist boat you can join without a host entry.

In one line: Regatta de Zamboanga is the vinta race on R.T. Lim Boulevard, usually an early-October Hermosa morning, not an April event, and the next race day still needs a city confirmation.

Why April listings are wrong

Older website copy, including the prior version of this page, said the festival was held every April, and in one table said the first week of March. Those lines conflict with city records.

Zamboanga’s public information office placed the 2025 Hermosa opening on 27 September and the Regatta de Zamboanga on 5 October. Philippine Star and Manila Bulletin covered that Sunday race the next day.

Philippine News Agency has long described the regatta as a Hermosa highlight in October. Treat April and “first week of March” as errors, not as a second calendar.

The city can still add other vinta days. MindaNews published a 22 February 2026 photo of colourful vintas on the same boulevard as a prelude to Charter Day. If you are travelling in February, ask whether that prelude is on again. If you are travelling for Hermosa, ask for the October Sunday. Do not merge the two into one date.

What 2025 showed

The city PIO said 235 vintas sailed on 5 October 2025, day 9 of Hermosa. A Philippine Star report the next morning said at least 267 vintas, each with two boatmen, mostly fishermen from nine coastal barangays, on a half-kilometre circuit.

Use both as published counts for that morning. Do not average them into a new number, and do not turn them into a 2026 promise.

City results named Boat No. 51 from Sinunuc first, then Sta. Cruz Island, Kasanyangan, Mariki, and Pangapuyan. A “Most Colorful Sail” prize went to another entry. Non-winning boats received a consolation amount that year. Prize figures change. They are not a reason to invent this year’s purse.

Stay behind marshals. Do not step toward the boats for a closer sail shot.
The crews are working fishermen. Ask before close portraits, especially of children.
Bring sun cover. Morning glare on the water is strong.
12 October at Fort Pilar is worship space. Dress for church if that is your day.
