May Festivals in the Philippines
May in the Philippines is busy in more than one way. Farmers and towns give thanks for harvest. Parishes fill with nightly flower offerings to Mary. Some communities close the month with a Santacruzan pageant. Lucban dresses whole house fronts for San Isidro. Obando dances for three fixed May days. Calling all of that “one May festival” hides what each rite is for.

Pahiyas on 15 May: the fixed harvest date
Pahiyas is Lucban’s house-decoration festival on the feast of San Isidro Labrador. Unlike Sinulog’s moving Sunday, 15 May is a fixed calendar date. The 2026 feast has passed. Treat 15 May 2027 as the next usual feast day, and still confirm with the Municipality of Lucban which streets are on the route and whether households welcome visitors into yards.
What you see is private façades dressed in kiping (leaf-shaped rice wafers) plus fruit, vegetables, and harvest displays. The visitor experience is walking the decorated route, not sitting for a tribes contest. Ask before touching decorations. Do not pull kiping as a souvenir. Try this: Arrive early for softer light and thinner crowds. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and treat the route as someone’s neighbourhood, not an open-air mall.
Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan: related, not identical
Flores de Mayo is the month-long Marian devotion of flower offerings and prayer, often led by children and youth in chapels and parishes. Santacruzan is the pageant procession that closes that season. It reenacts Saint Helena’s search for the True Cross, with sagalas (maidens) and titled reynas walking under flower arches. Photos of gowns under arches usually show the Santacruzan night, not the full month of daily rosaries.
Festive Pinoy’s guide notes that Fr. Mariano Sevilla’s Tagalog booklet Flores de Maria (around 1867) helped spread the devotion in Bulacan and nearby provinces, and that many towns schedule a grand Santacruzan near the end of May so relatives can attend. Obando: 17 to 19 May dance of three saints
Obando, Bulacan, keeps a fixed three-day feast: San Pascual Baylon on 17 May, Santa Clara on 18 May, and Nuestra Señora de Salambao on 19 May. Devotees dance as prayer for children, spouses, or a good harvest and catch. The modern festival is organised with the parish. Morning Mass, procession, and street dancing structure the days. Anyone may watch. Joining the dance carries weight for people with vows. Dress for church and town streets, not for a costume party. Obando is close enough to Metro Manila for a day trip, but traffic and crowds still reward an early start. Guide: Obando Fertility Dance.
Other May civic weeks: Magayon and Abaca
Magayon is Albay’s provincial celebration, usually associated with May and with the Bikol word for beautiful. It is a civic programme, not the same event as Peñafrancia in Naga. Provincial reporting summarised by Festive Pinoy says Magayon was not held in 2025 (election spending rules) and was cancelled in 2026, with funds realigned. Do not book a 2027 Magayon trip from an old “1 to 31 May” poster until Albay publishes a new calendar. Guide: Magayon Festival. Catanduanes’ Abaca Festival highlights farmers, fibre, and island products. Documented editions cluster in the fourth week or late May. The 2025 provincial programme ran 26 to 30 May, according to the Catanduanes Tribune. The Tourism Promotions Board has listed a May 27 to 31 window on its event page. What May is not
May is not the Santo Niño peak. That cluster sits in January in Cebu, Kalibo, and Iloilo. May is not Panagbenga either. Baguio’s flower festival belongs to February into early March. If a blog lists every famous Philippine festival under “May travel,” treat it as a thin roundup, not a calendar.
May is also not a free pass to enter private yards in Lucban or to treat Obando vows as entertainment. Harvest thanksgiving and fertility petitions are living religious and community practices. Watch first. Join only when you understand the invitation.
How to build a May itinerary without overload
- Decide whether your trip is harvest art (Pahiyas), Marian devotion (Flores / Santacruzan), vow dancing (Obando), or a provincial civic week (Magayon / Abaca when held).
- Lock fixed dates first: 15 May for Lucban, 17 to 19 May for Obando.
- Ask the parish for Santacruzan night instead of assuming every town closes on the same Saturday.
- Leave buffer days. May heat and afternoon rain are common. Do not schedule Lucban dawn and a late Obando Mass as if they were next door.
- Re-check LGU and church notices 48 hours before travel.
