October is one of the busiest festival months in the Philippines, but it is not one single party. Bacolod fills the calendar with smiling masks for MassKara. Camiguin thanks the lanzones harvest. Sorsogon marks provincial prosperity and foundation memory. Zamboanga City centres October on Fiesta Pilar, the feast of Nuestra Señora del Pilar.
Calling all of them “October festivals” is useful for travel planning. Mixing their meanings is not.

MassKara season: Bacolod’s October centrepiece
MassKara is the festival most travellers mean when they type “October festivals Philippines.” It is Bacolod’s civic celebration of smiling masks, street and arena dance, pageants, and city events. It is not a parish feast with one procession day.
Public history places the first festival in 1980, during a hard sugar-industry period and after a ferry tragedy that shook Negros families. The smiling mask became Bacolod’s public face of resilience, and the city later became widely known as the City of Smiles.
At the 11 September 2026 launch, festival organisers announced a 1 to 18 October 2026 window, with Electric MassKara and street-dance peaks on 16 to 18 October, and post-festival awarding described for 25 October. Digicast Negros and Inquirer covered the same launch week.
Venues named then included Araneta Street for street dance, the SM City Bacolod reclamation bridgeways for arena competition, the Bacolod Public Plaza for awarding, STI Gymnasium for Miss Bacolod MassKara, and The Upper East for Electric MassKara. Organisers also said schedules and venues can still change.

Practical planning for Bacolod in October is about heat, evening shows, and temporary road closures. Arrive early for street routes. Leave extra time to cross the city between hotel, plaza, and mall venues. Carry water.
If your trip is only for the masks, aim for the major-event weekend rather than the full three weeks, then recheck the city’s final timetable.
Zamboanga Hermosa and Fiesta Pilar
In Western Mindanao, October centres on Zamboanga Hermosa, also called Fiesta Pilar. The festival honours Nuestra Señora del Pilar, whose outdoor shrine stands at historic Fort Pilar. The feast day proper is 12 October. Republic Act No. 7350 declares that date a special non-working holiday in Zamboanga City so residents can keep the feast.
City tourism materials describe a longer late-September to October programme around that fixed day, with the maxim “vamos a celebrar.”
Hermosa blends faith and civic spectacle. Devotees attend novenas and Masses at the shrine. The city stages cultural shows, sports, pageants, and often a Regatta de Zamboanga with colourful vinta sails. Lanzones Festival in Camiguin
Camiguin’s Lanzones Festival is a harvest thanksgiving for the island’s famous lanzones fruit. The Tourism Promotions Board lists the venue as Mambajao, Camiguin, and describes a week-long celebration with street dancing, a tableau competition, a trade fair, and related activities.
Local reporting often dates the first festival to 1979 as a simple products fair and dance showcase that later grew into the province’s largest annual cultural event.
Timing sits in the third or fourth week of October, when harvest is usually strong. TPB’s event page shows an October 20 to 27 window without locking a single permanent year. Travel listings for 2026 sometimes print other day ranges. Treat those as leads, not tickets.
Confirm the current Camiguin provincial or municipal calendar, ferry capacity, and lodging before you book.

Kasanggayahan Festival in Sorsogon
Kasanggayahan is Sorsogon’s major October celebration. The word is widely glossed as prosperity. The Tourism Promotions Board describes it as the province’s largest celebration, linked to Sorsogon’s declaration as a province separate from Albay, and known for local products including pili and other farm goods.
A signature feature is Pantomina sa Tinampo, a Bicolano courtship dance (often called the dance of the doves) performed in the streets.
TPB lists a 1 to 31 October window for the festival. The Sorsogon provincial government explains that Congress declared 17 October a special public holiday for the province in connection with foundation anniversary observance, and that the modern Kasanggayahan pattern was revived after earlier gaps.
Exact Pantomina days, trade-fair hours, and municipality side events move. Confirm with the Provincial Government of Sorsogon and festival organisers for the year you will visit. Do not book from an old poster alone.

Try this: Pick one primary “why” for October travel. Masks and nightlife energy (MassKara), Marian feast and coastal culture (Hermosa), fruit harvest on a small island (Lanzones), or Bicol foundation dance and products (Kasanggayahan). Build flights around that choice instead of racing four regions in one weekend.
What October is not
October is not the Santo Niño peak. That cluster sits in January in Cebu, Kalibo, and Iloilo. October is not Panagbenga either. Baguio’s flower festival belongs to February into early March. It is also not Peñafrancia’s main Marian cycle in Naga, which centres on September.
If a blog dumps every famous Philippine festival under “October travel,” treat it as a thin roundup, not a calendar.
October weather can bring late-day rain on Negros and Mindanao coasts and wetter spells on Camiguin. Pack a light rain layer. Expect crowded ferries and hotels near major weekends. Respect religious space at Fort Pilar and any Mass or novena. At civic competitions, stay out of judging lanes and do not block dancers for photos.
